Law enforcement is warning National Grid customers of a billing scam reported across all of upstate New York.

In this scheme, impostors claiming to be representatives of National Grid will call or email customers, telling them their services will be shut off unless the balance on their account is paid using a prepaid debit card or money transfer.

The scammers may also ask for personal information like a Social Security number or National Grid account number.

The company says although it will contact customers regarding overdue balances, National Grid will never accept payment through prepaid debit cards.

If you believe you’ve been a victim of this scam, contact your local law enforcement immediately.
