Staff for a nursing home in upstate New York are calling out management for failing to protect the health and safety of their workers.

According to the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, 65 of their workers at Valley View Manor in Norwich, in Chenango County, are not receiving enough personal protective equipment.

“We demand management speak with workers immediately about their needs to protect not just their health, but the health of their families, their patients and the entire community. Management should provide workers with the needed personal protective equipment which will allow them to focus on caring for their patients,” said Stuart Appelbaum, president of RWDSU.

Data released by the Department of Health at the beginning of the month, showed that around 15 percent of COVID-19 deaths are in nursing homes and one in three have been affected.

The DOH will not specify which nursing homes have been some of the hardest hit due to privacy concerns, cited Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker.
