New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams is weighing in on an upstate Democratic primary race, throwing his endorsement behind Albany County Legislator Sam Fein who is running against incumbent John McDonald for the 108th Assembly District seat. 

“I am proud to endorse Sam Fein for Assembly because he has shown a true dedication to working for a more fair and just society and will not bend to the will of powerful, big money special interests that seek to divide us,” Williams wrote in a statement.  

Fein also has the endorsements of groups like the Working Families Party, 1199 SEIU, Citizen Action New York, People of the American Way, People’s Action, and feminist author Barbara Smith.

Elected to the Albany County Legislature twice, Fein is running against McDonald, the only state lawmaker who is also a medical professional. 

McDonald who has been serving the 108 Assembly District for eight years, has received the endorsements of groups like the League of Conservation Voters, New York State United Teachers, PBA of NYS, Voters for Animal Rights, National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund, and 32BJ SEIU. 

McDonald also has endorsements from almost every locally elected official within the district including Mayors of Albany, Cohoes, Watervliet, Troy and the Village of Green Island, as well as nods from U.S. Representative Paul Tonko and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.
