Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York Attorney General Letitia James in statements on Wednesday condemned the rioting by a mob of President Donald Trump's supporters a "coup attempt" fomented by the president.

“The coup attempt initiated by outgoing President Trump has been despicable," James said in the statement. "Today, it became violent. If blood is shed, it will be on his hands. These actions, fueled by lies and wild conspiracy theories espoused by President Trump, must be unequivocally condemned by every corner of our society."

The unrest at the Capitol began as Congress undertook the certification of the 2020 presidential election, won by President-elect Joe Bdien. James, a Democrat, has said investigations into the president's business dealings will continue by her office after he leaves the White House.

“Ultimately, I am confident the rule of law will prevail," she said. "Joe Biden, our duly elected president, will assume office on January 20th and history will remember this as a sad but unsuccessful attempt to destroy our democratic republic.”

Cuomo called the storming of the Capitol a "failed coup" attempt of the country encouraged by the president.

"The cornerstone of our democracy is the peaceful transfer of power," Cuomo said.

"We must call this what it actually is: a failed attempt at a coup. This is the final chapter of an incompetent, cruel, and divisive administration that has trampled on the Constitution and the rule of law at every turn, and we won't let President Trump, the members of Congress who enable him, or the lawless mob that stormed our nation's Capitol steal our democracy. The election results are clear and the will of the American people will be carried out."

North Country Rep. Elise Stefanik, meanwhile, posted to Twitter she and her staff are safe. Stefanik was among the Republicans who had indicated they would challenge electors for the vote, which was expected to fail in Congress.

"Americans have a Constitutional right to protest & freedom of speech, but violence in any form is absolutely unacceptable & anti-American," she said. "My staff & I are safe. We pray that all of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, their staff, & all Americans remain safe."
