A bill meant to combat age discrimination in the United States cleared a bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday with the backing of Hudson Valley Rep. Antonio Delgado.

The measure is meant to address legal protections for older workers, putting them on par with existing laws that bar discrimination against race, sex nationality and religion.

Delgado, a Democrat, pointed to surveys that have found 60% of older Americans experiencing some form of age discrimination while on the job. The measure is also moving through Congress amid a changing economy, as workers return to offices and other workplaces as COVID-19 cases subside. Some workers have expressed reservations about returning to a pre-pandemic schedule.

“I was proud to join colleagues from both sides of the aisle to pass the Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act, which amends the law to ensure older workers have the workplace protections they deserve," Delgado said. "This legislation will help provide job security for Americans across the country, allowing them to continue providing for their families in a rapidly changing economy.”
