Progressive advocates at the Fair Elections Campaign on Thursday launched a $150,000 advertising campaign to urge Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to approve a package of election and campaign finance law changes in the U.S. Senate.

The campaign is set to include billboards and digital ads, as well as radio and print ads.

"New Yorkers, and the nation, are counting on Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to not only keep Democrats united in support of comprehensive democracy reforms, but to pass them through the Senate," said Jess Wisneski, the co-executive director of Citizen Action of New York. "As the Senator has told us many times, 'failure is not an option.' Now he must use every day of August recess to keep the pressure on and shore up every Democrat, including President Biden. America needs a law that has all the critical elements of S1, including a small donor public financing system. The Democrats in leadership in Washington can no longer allow Republicans to kill this popular legislation with the filibuster, a legislative maneuver used time and again to block civil rights legislation."

The campaign dovetails with a letter sent by the Fair Elections for New York coalition, composed of a range of advocacy groups, to Schumer calling on him to back a broader public campaign financing system in the final amended bill. The letter pointed to support from all 50 Democrats in the U.S. Senate, as well as Sen. Joe Manchin's support for the issue when he was governor of West Virginia.
