Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers live with an undocumented immigrant in their household or as a member of their family, a report released this month by the advocacy group FWD.us found.

All told, 10.6 million Amiercans live with an undocumented immigrant, a data point that is leading advocates to call for immigration reforms at the federal level as well as in New York. The data highlights the wide-ranging impact immigration policies have on families and households, especially in states like New York, which has a large immigrant population.

New York, along with California, Texas and Florida have the highest numbers of U.S. citizens living with an undocumented individual.

In New York, there are 630,000 adults and children who are U.S. citizens and live with an undocumented immigrant. That includes 226,000 children who are U.S. citizens and have an undocumented parent living with them. There are 110,000 U.S. citizens in New York who have an undocumented spouse.

FWD.us pointed to the economic benefits of changes to immigration status, estimating it could add an additional $59 billion to the economy.

“Millions of undocumented immigrants and their loved ones continue to live in limbo due to congressional inaction on immigration reform,” said Phillip Connor, FWD.us senior demographer. “In addition to the economic benefits a pathway to citizenship would provide, we have a moral imperative to keep mixed-status families and all undocumented immigrant families safe and together. A pathway to citizenship from Congress is the only solution.”
