Maria Vullo, New York's former top banking and insurance regulator, on Wednesday joined the crowded Democratic primary field for state attorney general.

Vullo has served previously in the state attorney general's office as an executive and was the superintendent of the Department of Financial Services, an agency that oversees New York's banks and insurance companies.

"New York’s Attorney General must have the courage to take on the bad guys and win the determination to work hard for others, the experience of running huge government agencies, and the smarts and know-how to get it done for all New Yorkers," Vullo said.

In her announcement, Vullo pointed to the implementation of the state's paid family leave law, efforts to secure access to health care and mandating coverage for maternal depression screening and 3D mammograms.

She is joining a race for the Democratic nomination following incumbent Letitia James' last month announcing her campaign for governor, opening up what is arguably the second-most prominent elected position in state government.

The race also includes Fordham Law professor and activist Zephyr Teachout, attorney Daniel Goldman, Sen. Shelley Mayer and Assemblyman Clyde Vanel.
