New York has seen a surge in COVID cases in recent weeks amid the spread of the omicron variant, considered a more contagious, but likely more mild version of COVID-19, especially for people who have been fully vaccinated and received a booster shot.

The testing sites are being opened as long lines have formed at local testing sites around New York amid the surge, and as people have sought rapid test kits for at-home use, but those have been difficult for many to find.

There were an additional 51,000 COVID positive tests in the last day, though Hochul cautioned those numbers are artificially low given the holiday weekend.
