New York is entering the next phase of the post-Roe v. Wade world by providing 13 organizations with state money to boost abortion service providers, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday.

The groups, which have 63 clinics across the state, will get the first share of the $10 million provided to conduct more hiring and expand operations, among other things.

The funds are part of $35 million that was set aside within the state Department of Health and the Division of Criminal Justice Services back in May when the potential loomed for the Supreme Court to overturn the 1973 landmark ruling but before the actual ruling came down.

The move comes as New York officials anticipate a flow of out-of-state residents from states that now have or soon could have much tighter restrictions on abortion services. Hochul said they expect this because they saw the same thing after New York legalized the practice in 1970 before it was protected nationally three years later.

“Any woman in need of reproductive health care will be welcomed with open arms here in New York,” Hochul said.

This is the latest move by the state to counteract the Supreme Court’s ruling. During a recent extraordinary session called to address gun laws, the New York Legislature approved an amendment to the state constitution that would enshrine the constitutional right to abortion. It must be approved by another separately elected session of the Legislature and then put before voters in a referendum before it becomes law.
