What You Need To Know

  • Tammy Mahoney was 19 years old when she went missing while hitchhiking in Onedia on May 8, 1981

  • FBI investigators are looking to find a person who found a wallet nearly 40 years ago

  • They say the lost wallet belongs to someone who knows about Tammy's disappearance and saw her the night she went missing

  • Anyone with information is asked to call 315-731-1781

"We want the public to know the FBI, along with our partners with the Oneida City Police Department, will never stop looking for her," said FBI Albany Field Office Special Agent in Charge Thomas Relford. "But now more than ever, we need your help."

New information could help the FBI find Mahoney. Investigators say that one week after she disappeared, someone dropped off a lost wallet to the police station. They believe that person could be a big help.

"I want to stress this individual is not in trouble, but we still want to talk to them, and are very interested in what they have to say about the wallet. We realize this was a long time ago, but we believe this wallet is directly connected to this investigation," said Relford.

Investigators say the person who the wallet belongs to saw Tammy the night she disappeared and may know what happened to her.

"This is a very active case and we won’t stop working until we find her," said Relford.

Investigators are looking at four different suspects. Knowledge about the wallet is critical to bringing justice to Tammy and her family.

"They might not think it’s much, but it could be that final piece that we need to solve this," said Relford.

There is a $20,000 reward for information that could lead to Mahoney's recovery or those responsible for her disappearance.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the wallet, or the person who dropped it off, to call 315-731-1781.
