A Syracuse man and member of the local "Proud Boys" chapter has been arrested and charged for his alleged role in the U.S. Capitol riot in Washington on Jan. 6, according to the FBI.

According to an indictment from the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., Matthew Greene, 33, of Syracuse, was named in a superseding indictment, along with two defendants who were charged in the prior indictment: Dominic Pezzola, 43, of Rochester, and William Pepe, 31, of Dutchess County.

The indictment alleges that Greene and the others were among some of the first members of the riot to gain entry to the Capitol Building and Greene held a police shield that was taken from a Capitol Police officer by Pezzola.

It also states that Greene later sent a message through an encrypted messaging app to an associate who asked about his well-being and he replied "I'm good, we took the capital."

Greene was arrested on Tuesday and had his initial appearance in court the same day. He has been charged with:

  • obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding abetting
  • obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder and aiding and abetting
  • destruction of government property and aiding and abetting
  • entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds
  • disorderly conduct in a restricted building or grounds
  • disorderly conduct in a restricted building or grounds and aiding and abetting

“According to the indictment, Mr. Greene and his co-conspirators intended to stop, delay, or hinder Congress’ certification of the Electoral College vote ‘by force if necessary,’” the FBI in Albany said. “His actions were deliberate, dangerous, and illegal. Now he must face the consequences.”

According to the Associated Press, more than 400 defendants in 45 states have been charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot.
