Onondaga County Sheriff Eugene Conway says he won't seek re-election this year.

Conway made the announcement Friday through the sheriff's office, saying he will leave office when his term ends. He's currently in his second term as sheriff.

"As I am now in my 45th year of law enforcement and as this profession will always go on there comes a time when those who serve 'hand it off,' " Conway said in a statement. "That time is the end of this year for me."

Conway has been sheriff since 2015.
