The popular Teal Ribbon Run is now a spring event after being held for many years in the fall. The annual 5K run and 3K walk will take place Saturday morning in the Village of Minoa.

Organizers said they wanted to do a better job of spreading awareness about ovarian cancer throughout the year.

This year, the event falls just a few days after World Ovarian Cancer Day, which encourages more people to join the fight against this cancer.

The Teal Ribbon Run is the largest fundraiser of the year for Hope for Heather, a non-profit group aimed at raising awareness about ovarian cancer. A survivor tent and other booths will be set up in Lewis Park so that women can learn more about the symptoms.

There's no doubt the village will be packed with participants and supporters on Saturday. Organizers said the village has really embraced the event and helps make it a success every year.

"The support has been just so fantastic that we are just so grateful that we have a home here in Minoa. And we're just so grateful to all the businesses and people that reach out to help us every year.  We couldn't do it without them," said Hope for Heather President Frieda Weeks.

This year marks the 14th year for the event, which was started in memory of Heather Weeks. Heather died at age 24 in 2008 after battling colorectal cancer.

If you're interested in participating, you can register online or sign up in person.

All of the proceeds will go to the non-profit to benefit cancer research, patient support and advocacy.

Both the 5K run and 3K walk will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. To register for the run or to learn more, visit HopeForHeather.org.
