CHARLOTTE -- A global day of giving that kicks off the season of giving on Tuesday.

Giving Tuesday CLT is hoping to raise $10 million for 235 Charlotte-area nonprofits.

“It's now the 2nd largest day of giving after December 31st,” said Amy Jacobs, campaign manager for SHARE Charlotte.

Heart Math Tutoring is one of those 200+ nonprofits that will benefit from this campaign.

Executive Director Emily Elliott told us the money they raise helps to provide tutoring opportunities for elementary school students in Charlotte.

Organizers said funds are just as important as people donating their time.

“Our program solely runs on volunteer time. We've been so fortunate that 950 people have signed up to be volunteer tutors, but there are 45 more students that need volunteer tutors,” Elliot said.

They’re looking for people who can commit just one hour a week, and SHARE Charlotte said pledging volunteer time does count toward their Giving Tuesday goal.

“Many nonprofits are volunteer only, including their staff and board, and so volunteering time for next year, pleding time for them is tremendous,” Jacobs said.

But just like any other donation you might make, Charity Navigator says always do your research.

Spokeswoman Sara Nason suggested looking into the history of a nonprofit you want to help.

“What have they done before? How do they talk about their work? What are their results? Can they talk about their results?” Nason said.

Your money could go to the nonprofit that shares your passion and help make a difference in your community.
