Charlotte councilwoman responds after controversial tweets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte councilwoman is not changing her message after wives of police officers addressed their concerns regarding her use of social media.

Council members are resposible for their own social media accounts
LaWana Mayfield still stands by her tweets
She says she isn't speaking for all police officers

After hearing comments from families of police officers, Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield offered several responses via Twitter, not backing down.

To ALL OF YOU talking nonsense about my posts, Forget YOU. A Black man can't drink in his own garage, can't drive down the street, car can't break down, can't walk in a store without being killed by someone in a police uniform. While I understand some Elected Officials attempting to take sides on the issue of Police brutality the fact is that I never said All Police are corrupt. The amount of calls I have received by those affected is overwhelming. I will be having community talks led by them. #StandUp

LaWana Mayfield’s Twitter has been a topic of discussion after she said “Being black in America under #45 has created homegrown terrorist wearing blue uniforms.” She was sharing an article about Stephon Clark, an black man who was shot by officers in Sacramento, California.

In response, several family members of Charlotte police officers expressed their thoughts at a council meeting Wednesday evening. They showed up with their children and with posters and t-shirts saying, "My husband is not a terrorist. My husband is my hero," a message they echoed throughtout the meeting.

Thursday morning, Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem Julie Eiselt expressed that she doesn't agree with Councilwoman Mayfield's tweets.

A city spokesperson told Spectrum News that each member of the council is responsible for their own social media accounts. They are elected officials, not city employees.
