RALEIGH, N.C. -- The State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement responded to reports that ballots at some precincts in Wake County cannot be fed through tabulators.

  • Humidity is causing some tabulators to be unable to read ballots in Wake County.
  • Back-up procedures will be used to assure every vote is counted.
  • An audit will follow back-up procedures, as is protocol.

They have determined that this is being caused largely by humidity.

The board says while the ballots cannot be read by tabulators, they are being stored securely in “emergency bins” and will be tabulated as soon as possible.

The State Board office has advised officials to work to ensure voting areas are kept as cool and dry as possible.

Though this development is concerning to many voters, the board says it can assure the public that all ballots will be counted.

After the election, the State Board will conduct a series of post-election audits, one of which compares the number of authorization-to-vote forms signed by voters with the number of ballots tabulated at each location.

This audit will ensure the number of voters matches the number of ballots counted.
