CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- UNC Charlotte students can expect some security changes when they go back to school in a few weeks. They come less than four months after the deadly shooting on campus.

  • The 60-officer force isn't getting bigger but it's partnering with area agencies like CMPD and Matthews Police to provide extra support.
  • Many of the extra officers will be seen at the start of the semester and at large events like football games and commencement.
  • The university is also installing posters with emergency contact information in classrooms and increasing the number of active assailant response trainings.

UNCC Police Chief Jeffrey Baker said the 60-officer force isn't getting bigger but it's partnering with area agencies like CMPD and Matthews Police to provide extra support.

Many of the extra officers will be seen at the start of the semester and at large events like football games and commencement.

The university is also installing posters with emergency contact information in classrooms and increasing the number of active assailant response trainings.

"We're offering a lot of that as well even though I will say prior to the shooting we offered 52 sessions in the past year-and-a-half which is far more than most universities," Baker said.

Despite the additions many security measures will stay in place, including a tool the university used on April 30. The button allows the university to lock almost every external door on campus in seconds.
