JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — I-95 south was closed for several hours after a multi-vehicle accident left one person dead and seven others injured.

The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. on I-95 near Exit 79. Officials say a tractor-trailer was heading north near Exit 78 when it crossed the median and ran into another vehicle head-on. 

The truck then jack knifed and collided with several other vehicles. 

At this time, officials say one person is dead and seven others have been transported with varying injuries. Three of those individuals are in critical condition. 

The accident caused heavy delays throughout the area.
