WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A group of students is honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service.

Organizers with The City of Winston-Salem hosted the 12th Annual MLK Read-in event to promote Dr. King’s messages of civil rights, literacy, and the importance of community service.

College students connected with other children as reading buddies. One student believes it’s important to teach them about the historic day.

“Especially now after having a summer of so many civil issues and social injustice I experienced," said Landon Bradshaw, a volunteer. "Especially in the murder of Breonna Taylor, I felt a need to get involved with my community.”

Organizers say they hope to have the MLK Read-in be a springboard for service throughout the year.
