CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A one-of-a-kind organization in Charlotte is helping prepare teenagers for the real world.

GenerationNation teaches young adults about the importance of civil leadership and being involved in their communities.

What You Need To Know

  • GenerationNation is the only Charlotte organization providing this service to local K-12 students

  • There are over 150 diverse student leaders from 40 high schools

  • Nearly 1 million Charlotte-Mecklenburg students have built and applied civic knowledge and skills through GenerationNation programs

The organization sponsors weekly and monthly events that pair the teenagers with government officials, community leaders and business owners.

Breana Fowler serves on the group’s board. The 16-year-old is the captain of North Mecklenburg High School’s softball team and serves on at least a dozen other organizations and committees.

Through GenerationNation, Fowler has been able to focus on her passion; education. She’s worked with the school district on the district’s budget and hopes to address issues she’s seen first-hand in schools.

“I would focus on suspension rates and how to be proactive and how would I be in the classroom to reduce suspension rates. Would I put minority teachers in the classrooms," Fowler asked.

Now, Fowler is learning how to advocate for change to address issues like suspension rates. GenerationNation is helping Fowler find the tools and voice to do so.

“It’s about mental health advocacy and public policy, and the environment and how we can keep it beautiful,” she added.
