CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Sexually transmitted infections are on the rise, Novant Health says.

With less social distancing, doctors are worried about an increase in cases. Before the pandemic, STIs were already at an all-time high six years in a row.

Novant Health says cases dramatically decreased during March and April of 2020 and so did the testing. Doctors say that leaves a number of STI cases undetected and untreated.

They advise that it's extremely important to get tested so the infections do not spread.

“Now with the restrictions being lifted and the vaccinations being rolled out, people are feeling more comfortable mingling with others and possibly getting tested more frequently which is potentially why we are seeing the increase in STI cases," Dr. Siddhi Gupta said.

The most common infections being treated are chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis.
