ST. PAULS, N.C. (AP) —  A standout high school football player, who had signed to play at a North Carolina university, has been shot to death, according to a sheriff's office.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office says 19-year-old Marqueise Coleman of St. Pauls was shot early Thursday. A news release says Coleman was taken to UNC Southeastern Medical Center in a private vehicle where he was pronounced dead.

Coleman, who led St. Pauls High School to the state 2-AA high school championship game, had signed to play football at Fayetteville State University as a running back this coming season.

"As we mourn the loss of one of our Bulldog Family - Marqueise Coleman-Brown, please keep his family in your prayers," St. Pauls High School posted on Facebook. "Marqueise was a loved student, faithful friend, and committed teammate."

School leaders posted resources for those grieving.

Deputies ask anyone with additional information to call the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office at 910-671-3170 or 910-671-3100.
