WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Rollersking was a popular hobby in the 1980s. With thumping music and colorful lights, rinks offered some of the fun of a nightclub for teenagers.

What You Need to Know

The club has grown to 2000 members in just a a little over a month

Their next event is September 11

They plan on expanding the club to other cities due to its quick growth

Now, those same people who enjoyed dancing on skates to Prince, Michael Jackson and Madonna are in their 40s or older.

A new club in Winston-Salem called Ole Skool Skaters is encouraging those same people to get back into a hobby they once loved and help get them active again. Vice president, Christy Werts, said the response to their new club has been overwhelmingly positive.

"So the people in our age group, 40 and up, will have something to do, like everybody doesn’t go to the club or drink or whatever, we just wanted something to do for us, and it blew up faster than we thought. We thought we would have 10 or 20 people, and we ended up with 2,000 in a month and a half," Werts said.

She said they have created a positive community for people who just want to have fun at their age.

“Everyone is so supportive, and if you fall about 10 people are going to come and try to help you up. It’s been awesome, everyone is so nice," Werts added.

Ole Skool Skaters will hold an event every second Saturday of the month at Skateland USA in Clemmons. Their next event will be held September 11, and the theme will be NFL Saturday, and the club wants everyone to wear their favorite NFL team jersey. The club will also be honoring the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

With their rapid growth, they plan on expanding the skate club to Charlotte and even farther, like Atlanta. For more information you can visit 'Ole Skool Skaters' on Facebook.
