HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. — A school bus driver died in a crash in Henderson County Tuesday morning, according to the district.

The four students on board were taken to the hospital for treatment, but the school district did not give details on their conditions.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. on Green River Road in Zirconia, North Carolina, about 30 miles south of Asheville. The bus flipped off the road, the district said.

The bus serves students at East Henderson High and Flat Rock Middle, Henderson County Schools said.

"We are exceedingly sad to confirm that after a bus accident early this morning, Henderson County Public Schools lost one of our beloved bus drivers from East Henderson High," the school district said Tuesday.

Henderson County Schools identified the driver as Tina Gordon, 53. She has worked with the school system for 10 years, the district said.

"Our hearts are heavy as we mourn her loss," Henderson County Schools said.

The school district said it would send crisis response teams to the two schools to help support students and staff.
