NORTH CAROLINA — Tuesday is Election Day in many communities across North Carolina, and voters are being tasked to chose who will represent them in local government positions, such as mayors and city council members.

In some places, issues like property tax hikes are also on the ballot.

Elections in Raleigh and Fayetteville were postponed until next year because of a delay in census data.

What time are polls open?

Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Voters in line at 7:30 p.m. will be able to cast a ballot.

Most municipalities in North Carolina, there are 550 total, conduct elections in odd-numbered years, including 2021. Municipal elections are available only to voters who live within that municipality, and the voter must live in that municipality for at least 30 days before Election Day.

Around 35 municipalities have rescheduled elections until 2022 to adopt a new plan for local electoral districts.

Can I vote by mail?

Click here for election dates and options available, as not all municipalities offer in-person early voting and absentee-by-mail voting. Mailed ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day. 

Same-day registration is not available, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections. Residents who are not registered to vote by Election Day will not be able to vote in the election.

Do I need a photo ID?

A photo ID is not required to vote, according to the NCSBE. 

Will masks be required for in-person voting?

According the NCSBE, pollworkers and observers can be required to wear masks if the building requires it. However, voters cannot be required to wear a mask to enter the building.

NCDHHS issued guidance to voting places to adopt a variety of COVID-19 precautions, including:

• Encouraging voters, observers, and electioneers to wear a mask when indoors and maintaining physical distancing
• Providing disposable masks and hand sanitizer for use in the voting place
• Cleaning surfaces at least once a day, prioritizing those that are high touch
• Increasing air filtration and using fans to provide for increased air circulation to help reduce the concentration of viral particles in the air
• Posting signs, posters, and flyers at main entrances and in key areas throughout the voting location to promote behaviors that prevent the spread of COVID-19
