CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mayor Pro Tem Julie Eiselt will not seek another term on the Charlotte City Council.

Eiselt, who is in her third term on the council, made the announcement on her Facebook page late Sunday, saying she came to the decision "after much contemplation."

"It has been an honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Charlotte as Mayor Pro Tem and an At-large member of the council," Eiselt posted. "I am very proud of the work we have done over my three terms to move Charlotte forward as a city that strives to improve the quality of life for all residents, and values all people equally regardless of race, religion, economic standing or gender identity."

Charlotte leaders say Eiselt had not envisioned a role in public office until a man tried to abduct her at gunpoint in 2007, which led to her found Neighbors for a Safer Charlotte to advocate for court-system resources and policies to make all Charlotte residents safer. 

Eiselt ran successfully for Charlotte City Council in 2015. She chairs the Transportation & Planning Committee and is vice-chair of the Budget and Effectiveness Committee.

"I am also aware that for all our city’s successes, there is still much work to be done and I will continue to serve my community in other ways, to address the inequities that have left many people behind," Eiselt said. 

In 2019, Eiselt was appointed by Gov. Roy Cooper to serve on the North Carolina State Banking Commission. She was also appointed by then N.C. Transportation Secretary James Trogden to serve on N.C. FIRST, a state transportation revenue commission. 

According to Charlotte leaders, Eiselt is also a team leader for Room In The Inn, a board member of The Relatives, and has served on various arts boards.

"I am grateful to everyone who has helped me succeed in my time in office, and over the course of three campaigns. It means so much to me to have earned your support to do this work!" Eiselt said.
