WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Grindstone Fire at Pilot Mountain that burned for almost a week has been fully contained, the N.C. Forest Service announced Saturday morning.

Firefighters are removing equipment over the next few days, and smoke may still be visible, the Forest Service stated in a news release

The fire was first reported Nov. 27 at Pilot Mountain State Park, near Winston-Salem. The park remained closed Saturday.

Over the past week, dozens of firefighters from multiple agencies battled the blaze, which covered over 1,000 acres. Smoke could be seen for miles, and warning signs were put up along U.S. 52.

Officials said the Grindstone Fire was caused by a campfire in an undesignated area.

The Forest Service on Saturday warned that dry conditions persist across North Carolina, and the state on Nov. 29 banned open burning.
