RALEIGH, N.C. — A community group known as 100 Black Men of Triangle East spent Saturday giving back in Raleigh.

What You Need To Know

  • 100 Black Men of Triangle East held its annual donation drive at the New Bern House

  • Members collected food, toiletries and clothing for families in need

  • The organization provides youth mentorship opportunities year-round

Members held a donation drive for nonperishable food, toiletries and clothing. The donations benefit the New Bern House, a nonprofit that helps families in need.

This is the fifth year that the group has organized the drive, but members work year-round to help young people through mentorship, education and more.

“Our motto is real men giving real time, which is what we’re doing here today. Also, what they see is what they’ll be. We want young men to see professional role models and resources that they can look up to and have direction as they get older,” said Darrell Johnson, who is on the organization's mentoring committee.

“We love it. This is what we do. It’s good to see the brothers in the chapter because we’ve been virtual for so long. So we’re just glad to be out here on this beautiful day to give back,” Johnson said.

“We are an organization of professionals. We have doctors, attorneys, engineers, entrepreneurs, we have the full gambit," Johnson added. That’s what makes it so beautiful for our mentees. If they want to be an engineer, that’s in the chapter. If they want to be an attorney, that’s in the chapter. Whatever they want, we have it to give them the skills they need to grow."

100 Black Men of Triangle East was created in 1998 and is part of a national organization. The group is accepting new mentees in grades six through 12 as well as people who want to volunteer to mentor.
