A new state record for the catch of a mangrove snapper or gray snapper has been certified by the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries.

The 15-pound, 3.2-ounce fish was caught at the beginning of May by Adrian Faircloth of Supply. The fish was caught offshore at Frying Pan Tower off Bald Head Island, according to a press release from N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries.

Faircloth’s catch measured 29.5 inches from tip of the nose to the tail and had a 23-inch girth, the release stated.

The previous record in North Carolina for a mangrove snapper was in 2018 for a fish weighing 12 pounds, 5 ounces, caught off Ocean Isle Beach.
