Patrick Thomas joined the Spectrum News team in Raleigh as a storyteller full of curiosity. He is happy to be reporting on the people around Tobacco Road and what makes them tick.

Before joining Spectrum, Patrick cut his teeth as a reporter during the Boston Marathon bombings in April of 2013, while earning a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University.

After Boston, this Alabama native moved someplace even colder and survived three snowy winters in Bangor, Maine, working for ABC 7/FOX 22. Maine is also where Patrick won a spot news award from the Maine Broadcasters Association.

Patrick then spent four years telling stories in his home state of Alabama for ABC 33/40 in Birmingham. In 2021, Patrick was awarded second place in the Health-Medicine category by the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas.

Some of Patrick’s most memorable work includes reporting on the aftermath of two tornadoes in 2018 and telling the story of a boy’s mission to receive a heart transplant. One story that especially stands out to Patrick was when he interviewed a COVID-19 patient, Bill Siegendorf, about the ravaging effects of the delta variant on his body. When Bill died three days later, Patrick attended his funeral.

Patrick is a four-year-letterman in football at Birmingham-Southern College, where he played linebacker and defensive end. When Patrick isn’t tackling another news assignment, you can find him watching football, reading a good book, and exploring the outdoors.
