BEACHWOOD, Ohio — Tuesday not only marked the third day of Chanukah, for the Jewish community in Cleveland it also marked an opportunity to talk about antisemitism.

The Jewish Federation of Cleveland hosted the “Shine a Light on Antisemitism” Tuesday night at the organization’s building in Beachwood.

The event included a special menorah lighting, which was attended by people of all faiths, including Bishop Edward Malesic, head of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.

“We stand with you today, against modern forms of antisemitism,” said Bishop Malesic to the crowd of several dozen Ohioans. “We stand in solidarity with you against any forms of antisemitism.”

According to a report by the American Jewish Committee, one in four American Jews experienced hate in 2021.

Jono Nisenboum, a member of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, is also a descendent of Holocaust survivors. He said he was amazed to see the support from various faiths for the Jewish community in Northeast Ohio.

“I think seeing all come together and kind of help push forward, providing support and showing us that we’re not alone is super important and it’s pretty amazing,” said Nisenboum.
