SUNY New Paltz hosted a harmful algae bloom summit, focused on solutions for safe water. The area has faced this problem before with the Wallkill River. And it's not the only Hudson Valley water source with that issue.

Governor Andrew Cuomo attended this summit and discussed a $65 million state initiative to determine what causes blooms, inlcuding research.

"Start with 12 of the most problematic lakes, study those lakes, determine what is happening to cause the blooms in those lakes, address those lakes, and hopefully learn from the exercise overall," Cuomo said.

One of those 12 lakes is Monhagen Reservoir in Middletown, where the city's DPW commissioner says there was a bad harmful algae bloom a couple of years ago.
