In Newburgh, Hudson Valley Community Services commemorated world Overdose Awareness Day by sharing resources, and sharing stories.

Friday's event featured information on overdose prevention, including Narcan training and tools to help people secure or dispose of medication safely.

A panel of speakers addressed the group to share their experience in treatment and prevention, and some shared their personal experiences of addiction.

Organizers say these events not only connect people with information, but also help to reduce stigma by starting conversations.

"You have to have multiple ways to reach out to the community," says Director of Prevention Services for Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Dawn Wilkin. "This is one way where if someone doesn't have access to cable or internet so they can come and get information. So this is crucial to keep continuing to educate."
