"The minor interactions that I’ve had with the suspect Grafton Thomas were playing basketball with him when I was a kid maybe 20 years ago just down the street here in Greenwood Lake. He was just like anybody else growing up in a small town…everyone knew everyone’s names and faces," said Greenwood Lake Mayor Jesse Dwyer.

A local rabbi traveled to the suspect's home to perform a 'mitzvah' ceremony to counter the hate.

"The concept that it could even exist such a thought process in the world is tremendous tremendously evil," said Rabbi Meir Borenstein.

The rabbi reflecting on this attack which comes just weeks after three people were killed in an attack on a kosher market in Jersey City.

"After what just happened in Jersey City which was also a Jewish neighborhood coffee shop and now just a few days later it happens again right here in Monsey and it is very, very depressing, hurtful," said Rabbi Borenstein. "This is a concern that’s been going on for quite a few months already for all the tremendous anti-Semitic attacks that’s been going around the United States and the world but I tell people all the time that the only way to eradicate hate is to continue moving forward with happiness and love.”
