Even with the snow coming down, hundreds of first responders, family and friends gathered along Detective John Falcone Memorial Avenue in Poughkeepsie on Thursday to mark the 10-year anniversary of his death.

A wreath was laid at his memorial site, and a moment of silence was observed to honor Falcone, who was shot and killed when responding to a domestic violence incident on February 18, 2011.

Following the memorial, a gathering was held at Zeus Brewing Company to unveil a new beer in his honor, and raise a glass to the fallen detective.

"He put his life on the line – not unexpected for John to do that," said Christopher Libolt, a detective with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the vice president of the Police Benevolent Association. "He was very good at what he did and he loved working for the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department."

The beer in honor of the 18-year veteran features Detective Falcone’s name over a brilliant blue label. In less than an hour, the entire supply of the beer, a New England India pale ale, sold out.

A portion of the proceeds of the beer will go to the DC 10-13 Foundation, which supports police officers who are suffering financially due to illness or injury.

"We just did it more as a tribute for all of our first responders who go out day in and day out and put their lives on the line for all of us," said Jeremy Phillips, the owner of Zeus Brewing Company.

For members of Falcone’s family, the beer is the perfect addition to Detective Falcone’s lasting legacy.

"It’s a great honor for him, and it's just something another thing to add to his legacy that everybody can enjoy, and when they look at it, they could just have fond memories of John as both a police officer and as a person," said Robert Frank, Det. Falcone’s cousin.
