Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro said Thursday he will not be running for governor of New York State.

Molinaro, a Republican, had filed with the state Board of Elections last year for a possible 2018 campaign.

On Twitter, he said he made the decision not to run after contemplation and prayer, calling it "not the right time."

He went on to say, "I will focus on the important work we are accomplishing in Dutchess County, continue traveling the state advocating for those with disabilities, and my wife Corinne and I will continue raising our young family. While I will not be running for Governor, I deeply believe New Yorkers deserve new leadership, new ideas and renewal of a spirit of community that too many of our elected officials have abandoned."

When a Republican nominee is chosen, Molinaro says he will be an ardent supporter.
