FONTANA, Calif. — The fight against COVID-19 is all about teamwork, and Team Rubicon was doing its part by helping to set up San Bernardino County’s vaccination site at the Auto Club Speedway parking lot in Fontana.

Lorraine Riser is the Inland Empire city administrator for this nonprofit group. For her, helping to get people vaccinated is personal.

"I have a mom who’s in her 70s, and my dad as well," said Riser. "It’s just been a great concern. We’ve lost family members, and I don’t want to see it happen to anyone else.”

The group prepared Tuesday’s county vaccination super site event, which was eligible for people 65 and older in addition to health care and emergency professionals. Riser added that she is glad to play a small part in putting an end to the virus.

“When they come in to get their vaccinations, you see that glimmer of hope in their eyes that this is the right thing or the right answer,” she said.

The desire to get vaccinated is so high that all of the appointments filled up in 20 minutes. Throughout the day Monday, people like Carlos Ruiz kept driving up to the site trying to find out how they could get vaccinated.

“I’m 74 and my wife is 66," said Ruiz. "We need the vaccine to feel secure."

Ruiz is inspiring Riser to do the work. Since the beginning of the pandemic, she has helped to get people tested for coronavirus at super sites. Now it’s come full circle.

“I’m happy to watch it grow from paper and pencil to being out here and executing it in the community,” said Riser.
