Riding a bicycle in Los Angeles may seem hard to some, but the L.A. River Bike path offers an easy place to ride.

For Scott Edwards, who loves biking along the river in Frogtown, near downtown L.A., his bike isn't just a mode of transportation – it’s a way of life.

He rides everywhere, even volunteering as a petty cab driver on the weekends for Spoke Bicycle Café.

“It’s a special place. It’s a safe place. It’s a place of comfort. A place of renewal. A place of restoration,” Edwards explains.

While riders say they feel safe at Spoke, many don’t feel that way on the city's crowded streets.

L.A. leaders are working to make them feel safer through the Great Streets Initiative, The City Mobility Plan, and by adding bike paths along Metro lines.

As the city works to make the streets more bike friendly, Spoke has been doing that for years.

It’s the first business of its kind along the L.A. River Bike Path, offering food and coffee. Owner Richard Latronica wanted to have a space that catered to the bike community.

Latronica says the more places like this that open, “The more people can feel safe and comfortable riding their bike and know they have somewhere to go.”
