LOS ANGELES - According to scientific studies, water has a calming effect on our brains. Author and Marine Biologist Wallace Nichols spoke to our Robert Santos about 'blue mind' and the science of how being in close proximity to water -- be it the ocean, a lake, or a river -- can lower stress and improve our health.

"Blue mind is a phrase that refers to the mildly meditative state that being near, in, on, or even under water puts us in," said Nichols. "So just stepping up to the edge of the water, you start to feel something that's kind of different. Calmer, more connected to yourself, more connected to each other. More connected to your place. More clarity, maybe even more creativity."
