LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Coronavirus is on the minds of the medical staff at UofL Health. In the monthly 'Grand Round' meeting, Dr. Forest Arnold briefed a crowded audience of health professionals on the latest on the deadly virus.

While there have been no confirmed cases of the virus in Louisville or Kentucky, doctors aren't letting their guards down. Dr. Arnold claims staff is prepared, should thereby anyone who shows symptoms.

“Just like a sports team when they get the basics right, then it’s a much better team and they can work on the specialization. Well, the truth with SARS-CoV-2 (Novel Coronavirus) is you’ve got to do the basics right but then all of a sudden you’ve got to ramp up and do special personal protection equipment, so when that comes we’ve got to really be on our game," the epidemiologist says.

He's been researching the virus and monitoring the latest headlines. “I think with the education about something, you’re always less nervous with how to deal with it," says Dr. Arnold.

New Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a travel advisory against Japan, urging people to take appropriate precautions.

Americans returning from the cruise ship off Japan, The Princess Diamond, were released from quarantine this week. Two former elderly American passengers died.

Dr. Arnold urges people not to panic, just to be aware. He says there could be a vaccine for the virus in the next couple of months.

He also advises people who may have symptoms and plan to visit a doctor to call the clinic ahead of their visit, so staff can prepare and properly contain any potential contamination.
