FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear’s office released recommendations for Halloween this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

What You Need To Know

  • Beshear releases Halloween guidance

  • Recommendations include leaving individually-wrapped candy on driveway, porch

  • Also includes no large groups for trick-or-treating

  • Counties, local governments can put stricter guidelines in place

“We have put together the best guidance that we can for Halloween safe, but we can’t do things exactly like we did them before,” Beshear said.

The recommendations say no one should go door-to-door for candy, and instead, neighbors should leave individually-wrapped candy outside on their driveway or porch for kids still wishing to trick or treat.

Beshear’s office also recommends no large groups for trick-or-treating, and groups should stay in their own neighborhoods.

Trunk-or-treat events with large groups should be canceled, along with any in-person costume parties, according to the guidance.

“Halloween isn’t about adults, isn’t about a big party, it’s about those kids who look forward to it all year long,” Beshear said. “What I’d ask is you prioritize them.”

Beshear said he has faith in people to follow the guidelines because of the coronavirus, and he believes the recommendations are the best bet to enjoy Halloween and still be safe.

“Now is it perfectly safe to do with the CDC saying don’t trick or treat at all? No,” Beshear said. “Almost nothing is perfectly safe now. But we do think it could significantly reduce the risk that we face.”

The guidance also includes general advice like wearing face masks, social distancing, and sanitizing often.

County or local governments still have the option to impose tighter restrictions on Halloween if they choose to do so.
