  • Burbrink oversaw the unit involved in the drug raid on Breonna Taylor's apartment.

  • The demotion comes following a recoomendation to Chief Shields from her executive command staff.

  • Shields says she is confident in Burbrink's ability to serve the community.

Burbrink oversaw the unit involved in the drug raid that killed Breonna Taylor last March.

In a statement sent to Spectrum News 1, Shields said the demotion follows a recommendation from her executive command staff. The professional standards investigation was put in motion by her predecessor, interim Chief Yvette Gentry.

"Although these events unfolded prior to my arrival here, I find this to be the appropriate course of action based on the recommendations of my senior staff," Shields said.

Shields stressed the importance of internal investigations and subsequent disciplinary actions, adding that they are crucial to the increased accountability of the department.

"Although Lt. Burbrink’s rank has changed, I feel confident in her ability to continue to serve this community," Shields said.

Breonna Taylor was killed on March 13 after police served a no-knock warrant on her South Louisville apartment. Despite the warrant, police say they announced their presence before entering Taylor’s apartment.

Her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, said he did not hear an announcement, which is why he fired a shot after the apartment’s door was kicked down. That shot hit Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly in the leg, leading him and two other officers to return fire.
