LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Former Louisville Metro Police officer Brett Hankison is asking to have his $15,000 cash bond reduced.

What You Need To Know

  • Brett Hankison asks for bond reduction

  • A motion filed by his attorney says he is having trouble meeting financial obligations.

  • Hankison's trial is set for Feb. 2022

  • Judge Ann Bailey Smith will rule on the reduction

Hankison faces three counts of wanton endangerment stemming from the shots investigators said he fired blindly into a neighboring apartment during the raid on Breonna Taylor’s home on March 13, 2020.

Attorney Stewart Matthews filed the bond reduction motion Tuesday saying Hankison has been unable to find a job because of the charges against him.

In the motion, Matthews wrote, "The amount of time that this litigation has been pending and will continue to pend, has caused (the) defendant to expend his reserve funds, and he is having difficulty meeting his daily/monthly living expenses," Mathews wrote. "The return of the funds that he used to post his bail would be very helpful to him in meeting his financial obligations."

In April, Judge Ann Bailey Smith moved Hankison's original August trial date to Feb. 2022 because of COVID-19 concerns. A motion to have the trial moved out of Louisville was denied.

In the motion, Matthews said his client has proved he isn't a flight risk by reporting to court every time he has been ordered to appear. Matthews wrote, "There is no reason to believe that (the) defendant would fail to appear when required, and there is no evidence that he presents any kind of danger to the public."

Judge Bailey Smith will determine whether or not to reduce the bond.

A federal investigation into Taylor's death is ongoing. No one has been charged with her death.
