MAUSTON, Wis. (SPECTRUM NEWS) -- One central Wisconsin community came together Wednesday night in an attempt to break a world record. Residents of Mauston in Juneau County attempted to break a Guinness World Record for the most people singing Christmas carols at one time. The current record is held by a community in Ohio where more than 1,800 people gathered to sing.

Despite their efforts, Mauston fell short of the 2,000 people they were hoping to get sing, instead getting just around 650. Those in attendance seemed undeterred, saying it is not about the number of people you have singing but about community.

“Just so many people from so many walks of life, so many different areas, came together and share the Christmas spirit with. I don’t think you can put a price tag or a number on that.” Says Michael Pechman, who helped lead the chorus.

The world record attempt came immediately after the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train rolled through Mauston Wednesday night. Organizers of the record attempt say they plan to try again next year and believe as word spreads they will get even more people to come carol.
