Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, the leader of the Bronx Democratic Committee, announced Friday he will not seek re-election to the seat he's held since 2009.
Crespo in a statement said he would "purse opportunities outside of government."
"I will forever be grateful for what we have accomplished, the friendships I have forged and the amazing individuals who have served as part of my staff over the years and helped me deliver a body of work we can all be proud of," Crespo said.
Crespo was an instrumental lawmaker in the passage of the Green Light Law, a measure that allows undocumented immigrants apply for driver's licenses in New York.
He has also worked on issues meant to aid Puerto Rico after a hurricane and later an earthquake devastated the island.
Crespo's decision comes weeks after Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. announced he would not run for the Democratic nomination for mayor.
