ORLANDO, Fla. — SeaWorld will furlough 90 percent of its workers as it deals with the fallout from closure because of COVID-19.

SeaWorld said the workers are being furloughed beginning April 1 and will not be compensated after March 31, according to filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company said the workers would be eligible for unemployment benefits. The furlough affects workers at parks companywide, including Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

An SEC filing says that as of December 31, 2019, SeaWorld employed about 4,300 full-time and about 11,000 part-time workers.

SeaWorld is not sure how long the furlough period will be, but the company says it hopes to welcome its workers back once the park can reopen.

Walt Disney World, meanwhile, will keep its parks and resorts closed a little long because of COVID-19.

Disney announced the park in Florida and Disneyland resort in California will remain closed until further notice because of the pandemic.

Disney says it will continue to pay hourly parks and resorts cast members through April 18.

Disney closed its theme parks on March 15, and its hotels on March 20.

Legoland Florida also said it would stay closed through April 14. Because of the extended closure, Legoland's new Pirate Island Hotel will now open May 15 instead of April 17.

Universal Orlando already announced it was keeping its parks and resorts closed through April 19.
