ORLANDO, Fla. — No more boarding groups for a galaxy far, far away — at least for now.

What You Need To Know

  •  Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is now using a standby queue

  •  The popular attraction previously used a virtual queue system

  • Disney has said the virtual queue could return in the future

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios dropped the virtual queue Thursday and used a standby queue for the first time since it opened in late 2019.

Before the park opened for the day, a crowd had gathered inside the park as they waited to be let into Star Wars: Galaxy Edge, where the popular ride is located.

By the time Hollywood Studios officially opened at 9 a.m., the official wait time for Rise of the Resistance was listed at 180 minutes. An extended queue was used briefly to help manage the crowds.

Within a few hours, the listed wait time had dropped to 75 minutes.  Most of the other rides and attractions at the park had wait times at or below 30 minutes.

Prior to the standby queue, guests who wanted a chance to ride Rise of the Resistance had to use the virtual queue to join a boarding group and receive an estimated return time. Due to the popularity of the ride and how quickly boarding groups would fill up, many guests would often not get a chance to ride.

Earlier this month, Disney announced it would switch from virtual queue to a standby queue for Rise of the Resistance. The change comes as Disney reevaluates its experiences based on guest feedback.

The standby queue will remain in place for now, but Disney has said the virtual queue could be utilized again in the future. The virtual queue will be used for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure when it opens at Epcot on Oct. 1.
