ORLANDO, Fla. — Disney plans to share more details about the transformation of Splash Mountain into an attraction themed to "The Princess and the Frog" next month. In the meantime, the Imagineer leading the project is sharing more insight into the planned makeover.

​​​In an interview with Essence, Disney Imagineer Charita Carter talked about her career and the upcoming attraction, which will be the first one to center around Disney's first Black princess.

"I am extremely honored to have this responsibility," Carter told Essence. "It's hard work. And yes, I am nervous because I feel every day the weight of what it is that we are doing. But we have put together an amazing team of people." 

Carter, who led the team behind Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway at Disney's Hollywood Studios, talked about what the new attraction will mean for Tiana's story.  

"We are building upon what was done with the animated film," she added. "We're telling the next chapter story. We have this beautiful opportunity to give the character of Tiana depth and a dimensional space." 

Last June, Disney announced plans to turn its Splash Mountain attractions at Magic Kingdom and Disneyland in California into a "Princess and the Frog" attraction. In the announcement, Disney said the ride would be set after the events of the 2009 animated film with Tiana, Naveen and Louis the alligator preparing for their first Mardi Gras performance.

Carter did not discuss a timeline for when the new attraction would be completed. However, earlier this month, Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Tiana in the animated film, said during an appearance on "Live with Kelly and Ryan" that the ride would open in 2024. 

In a statement to Spectrum News, Disney said the timing for the attraction had not been determined and that more details would come in July during the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans.
