ORLANDO, Fla. — “Avatar: The Way of Water,” director James Cameron’s long-awaited followup to 2009’s “Avatar,” is set to arrive in theaters soon.

What You Need To Know

In a recent interview with Variety about the new film, Cameron said he reached out to Disney about updating the Avatar Flight of Passage attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with elements from sequel and future films.

“When Bob Iger came back a couple of weeks ago, I did send him an email and say, ‘You know, we can do Avatar 2 and 3 motifs and put them into the physical hardware of Avatar Flight of Passage,’” Cameron said.

Iger, who recently returned as CEO of Disney, seemed open to the idea, according to Cameron.

“So nothing has been decided,” he said. “But, you know, we would like to carry that along and update it from time to time with things that flow back out of the new movies.”

Flight of Passage, located in Pandora-The World of Avatar at Animal Kingdom, is a 3D flying simulator type attraction. Using a giant screen and special effects, the attraction creates the sensation of flying on the back of a banshee.

Disney has updated existing attractions with new film elements before. In 2015, a new scene from ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ was added to the Star Tours ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Updates from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” were later added to the attraction.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” will be released in theaters nationwide on Dec. 16.
